Relaxing music is a great way to relax, rest and get good quality sleep. Indeed, music therapy can effectively combat sleep disorders. It thus makes it possible to avoid the systematic use of medications. Discover the benefits of relaxing music for restful sleep.
he night is already well underway, but your brain doesn't want to stop and your eyes seem to want to stay open. Many thoughts race through your mind and prevent you from falling asleep. Result: you toss and turn in your bed and ruminate…

Sleep disorders disrupt the nights of many people. If you have difficulty falling asleep, insomnia or restless sleep, listening to relaxing music can be a good solution.

Relaxing music is in fact used in therapy to reduce stress and anxiety and thus maintain serenity and well-being. Several clinical studies, including that conducted by Music Care, have proven that a calm melody accompanies our body towards a state of tranquility. Consequently, music therapy can in many cases help you get back to sleep, avoiding the need for sleeping pills.

Music is a natural sleeping pill: A recent study by INSERM demonstrated that taking sleeping pills (benzodiazepines) increases the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and accelerates its progression.
However, there are gentler solutions to avoid taking these medications. Indeed, to help you sleep, listening to relaxing music is an excellent alternative!
Relaxing music: the key to restful sleep
Music has many daily benefits and plays an important role in our moods and emotions. It can also be the key to restful sleep thanks to its relaxing power.
But be careful, not all music is ideal for falling asleep. You must, in fact, choose your music carefully to promote sleep.
Relaxing music to slow down the heart rate: Listening to relaxing music before sleeping has a direct effect on our physical state.
According to a study, carried out by researchers at the University of Sheffield and published in the journal Plos One, music has the power to slow down our breathing and thus reduce our heart rate.
These physical changes are comparable to the effects of meditation, which slows the activity of the nervous system, thereby helping to lower blood pressure. To reduce stress and let go, yoga enthusiasts naturally practice different breathing exercises. Slowing down your breathing helps slow your heart rate and help you fall asleep more easily.
Music can therefore help those suffering from insomnia by also reducing the production of norepinephrine, the stress hormone.

To be considered relaxing, the music must be slow with a rhythm of around 60 to 80 bpm (beats per minute). Thus, its rhythm naturally accompanies that of the heart towards its resting speed.

At low noise levels, listening to relaxing music can help you increase the quality and duration of your sleep.
Music as therapy based on hypnosis
Convinced of the benefits of music against sleep disorders, Stéphane Guétin developed a musical therapy technique. Initially designed to relieve hospitalized patients, this receptive therapy is based on variations of rhythm, melody and frequencies in “U-shaped musical sequences”.
At the start of the sequence, the music follows a fast tempo, to be in phase with the patients' heart rate (around 80 bpm). Then the tempo gradually slows down, slowing down with it the heart rate, until the patient reaches a state of relaxation. After a few minutes, the tempo increases, always gradually, to help the patient regain consciousness until the end of the piece.

This method, already used in more than a hundred hospitals in France, is also indicated for sleep disorders. However, for the lulling effect, only the first phase of the U-shaped montage, in which the tempo gradually decreases, is concerned.
Choosing your relaxing music: Relaxing music ideal for sleeping and relaxing should have a slow, gentle rhythm and a pleasant melody.
There is no standard music to fall asleep to, and sounds do not relax everyone in the same way. Depending on your experience and musical tastes, you can choose and define your own relaxing music.

Soft jazz, pop, classical, lounge, chill-out, new age music, including the great masterpieces of classical music or even the sounds of nature... The variety of styles recommended by music therapists specializing in insomnia , allows everyone to find what suits them best.

Don't hesitate to try different styles of sounds or music to determine which one relaxes you the most. Once you have found your relaxing music, settle into bed and surrender to listening, meditation and well-being.
